5" S&W model 629. A unique, near one-of-a-kind need not cost a great deal. S&W made a short production run (500, I believe) of 5" .44 Magnums about 1959 for a large distributor. These guns have become collectibles. They are also great shooters with near perfect balance. They are lighter weight than the current 5" full lug barreled guns and easier to tote in the field. Some writers, John Lachuk, Skeeter Skelton, and Mike Venturino were owners, and spoke highly of them in their articles. The new S&Ws (made since the early 90’s) with improved yoke heat treatment withstand heavy use better than the collectable .44 Magnums. Some believe the 5" "N" frame with this barrel configuration, to be among the best looking of all handguns.

4" S&W M617. Another example of a near one-of-a-kind at a price that will not require a second mortgage. A Lothar Walther .22 barrel lines a .357 magnum S&W M66 barrel. The 4" models 19/66 look and shoot good. They are heavy enough to hold steady and small and light enough to be very portable. In stainless, a near perfect outdoor companion.
